Get your tickets to San Juan then go from there. There are alot of different party places. Go out in San Juan and ask around.

San Jose is the largest city, but the airport is actually in Alajuela, a suburb. This is not on the coast. It is in the center of the country. As with any foreign country, obey the laws so you can stay out of jail.

Why are you going to CR and are seemingly unaware of anything about the country. I am going to, but I have spent probably literally a total of 80 or so hours researching everything about CR.

It has some party towns, but mainly CR isn't really about that. Sad you don't know this and are already committed to going.

Good luck, though. Google it up. Go to tripadvisor.com, virtualtourist.com, and, the best is www.1costaricalink.com/ .
