FAVE CAVES - Cave of Ilithia
To get there, you have to take the Herakleion road to Agios Nikolaos. From there, take the right before Amnissos on the road that leads to Episkopi. The cave was re-discovered late in the last century. The locals were calling it “Neraidospilios” which means, the “Cave of Neraides/Fairies.” Excavations revealed the cave has been used as a place of worship from the Neolithic Period to the 5th century, B.C. At one time, the cave was maintained as a tourist site, complete with a parking lot and a few tourist facilities. But now, you can only enter the cave by requesting the key in a nearby village. |
