FAVE CAVES - How to Stay Safe

While caving in Greece is a fun activity, it is also potentially dangerous. As with any other sport, accidents may happen, though unavoidable ones are extremely rare. What you can avoid, you should try to avoid. Here are some tips to help you with that:

    Don’t try caving alone.

The barest minimum is three people. Why three? Because in case someone gets injured, one person can stay with the injured party while the other goes for help. Absolutely don’t try caving all by yourself, even if you are experienced, or you are already so familiar with the cave that you can find your way there with your eyes closed.

    Carry independent sources of light.

Again, the minimum is three. Remember that these light sources should be independent of each other. So include batteries, extra bulbs, waterproof matches, carbide, and whatever equipment or supplies can keep your light going.

    Wear the proper clothing.

Greece is hot during the summer months, and that’s why many people prefer to explore caves where it’s cooler. But cool can mean very cold, so be sure to wear warm clothes made of tough materials. The rocks can be sharp and may snag your clothes, especially if the passages are narrow.

So now that you know a little about caving and how to stay safe underground, here is a brief list of the most fascinating caves to explore in Greece:
