FAVE CAVES -What are the different types of caves?

With so many caves in Greece, it is likely that you will encounter almost every type of cave there is, with perhaps only one possible exception. So to give you an idea on what the caves in Greece may look like, here are brief descriptions of each:

    Solution Caves

This is the most common type of cave in Greece. Solution caves are formed by water in limestone or gypsum. The formation is often very slow and very gradual as the water dissolves the rock. However, because of the slow erosion, these caves often feature fascinating rock formations. In addition, they are also very solid and very rarely collapse.

    Talus Caves

Talus caves are quite simply made up of piles of boulders. They are often found in mountainous areas, especially near cliffs. The rocks are often made of granite, mostly broken, which can be hard on the body. Moreover, talus caves tend to be confusing and easy to get lost in, so it is important that you stay with your guide and never even think about exploring on your own.

    Ice Caves

Okay, this you will not find in Greece. They are mostly found in areas where there are lots of glaciers. Because of the temperature and the danger associated with it, ice caves are best explored by experienced cavers.

    Volcanic or Lava Caves

You will find several of these in Greece. Volcanic or lava caves are located near volcanoes, the passages having been formed by flowing lava. The walls of these caves are made of jagged rocks, so watch yourself as you go through the passageways. The rocks can be sharp enough to cut through your clothes.
