    Carnival In Trinidad: An Annual Affair To Remember

    Every person beholds the day s/he first saw the light of the world. So with Trinidad and Tobago, they rejoice the annual event called Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, celebrated before the Ash Wednesday. The heart of the Carnival in Trinidad is the Afro-Caribbean music style named calypso. Lately, Calypso was replaced with Soca as the top mainstream music type.

    In earlier times, the carnival in Trinidad rooted in the festivals of West Africa. Those were facilitated by the conventional French aristocracy where masks should be threw on and social visit be followed. Since most Western traditions were oppressed, using drums and some religious practices were outlawed and the slaves along with the former slaves created a pioneering way of passing on their tradition. Carnivals then grew with the influences from Africa. They added dancing, singing, music as well as high spirits to transform the event as to what most the carnival in Trinidad is today.

    The various musical competitions mostly make up the large part of the carnival in Trinidad, and winning in the competition is greatly coveted. The celebration tributes the island's greatest honors and most of these competitions are aired on the national television. Besides the honor are the enormous trophy, a whooping cash amount and a car, not counting the possible endorsements and some other contracts. Among the prestigious titles include Calypso Monarch, Panorama Champions, Road March and Soca Monarch.

    The instruments that are mostly used during the carnival competition are claves, drums and steelpans, a drum thrown diverse areas that create various notes. A set of performers often practice on this instrument weeks before the date of carnival event to compete and to expectantly bring home the bacon. Trinidad and Tobago is highly known for its culturally diverse inhabitants such as the European, Spanish, Asian and African. All these cultural groups combine their influences in music to bring out the best during the carnival. These contributions and cultures provide a sound that vastly differs from Carnival in Venice, Spain and New Orleans.

    Participants of the carnival in Trinidad wear costumes often adorned with sequins and feathers. The bandleaders usually start working on the group presentation months prior to the main event and showcase these costumes months before the big event.

    The carnival in Trinidad is an annual gala that evokes the past events of the country. It is a preparation while musing over the festivals of the past year.
